Our Story

BarberBox.id was founded in early 2023 in a small barbershop on Jl. Kemang Raya, South Jakarta, by two friends: Bagus Pratama, a third-generation barber whose grandfather opened a kutu-kutu chair in Bandung in 1968, and Sari Wijaya, a supply-chain specialist who spent a decade managing logistics for an FMCG multinational.

The idea was born from frustration. Bagus spent half his Mondays — the traditional barbershop day off — driving between three different suppliers across Jakarta to find replacement blades, premium pomade, and Barbicide concentrate. Some items were out of stock. Others were suspiciously cheap counterfeits that failed within a week. Time and again he watched fellow barbers give up and order cheap generic alternatives that left their clients disappointed.

Sari, meanwhile, had been quietly building an Excel sheet of every authentic distributor in Indonesia for her own brother's barbershop. When Bagus asked her, half-jokingly, "why doesn't someone just put it all in a box and ship it to me?" — the answer was obvious. Two months later, the first 50 BarberBox.id pilot boxes shipped from a co-working space in Kemang.

Our Mission

To make professional-grade barber tools and grooming products accessible, authentic, and affordable for every barber and grooming enthusiast in Indonesia — regardless of whether they cut hair in a high-end Jakarta salon or a one-chair shop in a Flores village.

We believe three things should be true for every Indonesian who picks up a clipper:

  • Authenticity should not be a luxury. Counterfeit grooming products damage skin, ruin blades, and erode trust in the profession. We refuse to stock them.
  • Geography should not dictate quality. A barber in Jayapura deserves the same Andis blades and Wahl clippers as one in central Jakarta — at a comparable landed cost.
  • Education is part of the product. A tool is only as good as the technique behind it. Every box ships with the educational context to use it well.

Our Values

1. Authenticity, always

Every product we ship comes from an authorised Indonesian distributor or a brand-direct partnership. We publish batch numbers for blades and clippers, and we encourage subscribers to verify them with manufacturers. If a product cannot be sourced authentically, we will not include it in a box — even at the cost of disappointing a subscriber that month.

2. Respect for the craft

Barbering in Indonesia is a profession with deep cultural roots — from the traditional tukang cukur who walked kampung lanes with a kutu-kutu chair strapped to his back, to today's fade specialists working in air-conditioned Jakarta studios. We design our boxes to honour both ends of that spectrum, and we employ two practising master barbers on our curation team.

3. Sustainability in sourcing

We actively prefer Indonesian brands when quality is comparable, to reduce carbon footprint and support the local industry. We minimise plastic packaging wherever temperature-sensitive shipping allows, and we partner with PAKPET to recycle used clipper blades returned by subscribers.

4. Transparency in pricing

Our subscription prices are calculated openly: product cost + curated curation fee + logistics + 18% margin. We publish an annual transparency report showing the average retail value of each plan's box versus its subscription price. In 2024, the average Pro box contained products with a combined retail value 27% above the subscription price.

"We don't want to be the biggest subscription box company in Indonesia. We want to be the one barbers actually trust — the one they would recommend to their apprentice without reservation."

Bagus Pratama, Co-Founder & Head of Curation

Meet The Founders

Bagus Pratama — Co-Founder & Head of Curation

A practising barber for 16 years, Bagus trained at the Pivot Point Academy in Singapore before returning to Jakarta to run his family's three-chair shop in Kemang. He curates every monthly box personally, drawing on a network of Indonesian and international barber brands built over a decade of attending trade shows in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Bangkok. He still cuts hair two days a week at the original Kemang shop — partly to test products, mostly because he can't imagine not cutting hair.

Sari Wijaya — Co-Founder & CEO

Sari spent ten years at a major Indonesian FMCG company managing nationwide logistics before co-founding BarberBox.id. She oversees supplier relationships, distribution, finance, and the parts of the business that turn "we have great products" into "those products arrive on time at the right address." She has an MBA from Prasetiya Mulya University and is a trustee of the Indonesian Barber & Salon Association (PERPASINDO) Jakarta chapter.

Our Curation Team

Beyond the founders, BarberBox.id employs a small but dedicated team based in Jakarta and Yogyakarta:

  • Two master barbers who serve as curation consultants — both still actively cutting hair in their own shops in Bandung and Surabaya so they remain grounded in real-world tool needs.
  • Three sourcing specialists who manage relationships with our 40+ supplier partners across Indonesia, Singapore, and the United States.
  • A four-person logistics team responsible for warehousing in Jakarta and Bandung, and for negotiating fair rates with our courier partners (JNE, SiCepat, AnterAja, and Pos Indonesia for outer provinces).
  • A two-person content team producing our monthly tutorial videos and printed educational inserts, in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
  • A three-person customer care team available Monday to Saturday via WhatsApp, email, and live chat.

The Bigger Picture

Indonesia's barbering industry has experienced explosive growth since 2020. The number of registered barbershops in major cities grew by more than 40% between 2020 and 2024, driven by a young, style-conscious population and the post-pandemic boom in male grooming. Yet the supply chain serving these barbers remains fragmented, inconsistent, and — in too many cases — infiltrated by counterfeit goods that undermine both safety and trust in the profession.

BarberBox.id exists to fix that. We are not the cheapest supplier in Indonesia, and we never will be — authenticity has a cost. But we believe that a barber who can rely on their tools is a barber who can focus on their craft, their clients, and their growth. That is the future we are building, one box at a time.
